Frequently Asked Questions - Recycling

Q: When is my recycling picked up?
A: Every second week as outlined in your Recycling Guide & Calendar.

Q: Why is my recycling day is different than my garbage day?
A: Recycling collection is a Regional District of North Okanagan program, whereas Garbage collection is a municipal program. Please contact your municipality for more information.

Q: Why do we have to use blue or clear bags instead of blue boxes?
A: Blue or clear bags protect the materials, can accommodate larger volumes, reduces litter, and eliminates costs to replace damaged or lost bins.

Q: I have a lot of cardboard boxes. Do I have to put them in bags?
A: No. If it is not raining, snowing, haling, or windy, cut down boxes to 1 metre (3 foot) sections and tie with string and place next to or under the bags. Bundles must not weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs).

Q: Is there a place I can drop off my recycling?
A: Yes. All Recycling and Disposal Facilities have drop bins for blue bag recyclables. Also check your local yellow pages for private drop off recycling sites such as Bottle Depots or contact the BC Recycling Hotline at 1.800.667.4321, hotline@rcbc.bc.ca or online at www.rcbc.bc.ca.

Q: What types of plastic are accepted?
A: All colours of plastic containers with the recycling code 1-7 and all plastic film (grocery & shopping bags, box wrapping, saran wrap, etc) are accepted. Ensure all plastic is clean.

Q: What type of metal can I put in my Blue Bag?
A: Clean tin and aluminum cans, jar lids, aluminum trays, and aluminum foil.

Q: Why is the Blue Bag Program compulsory in most of the Regional District?
A: This allows the service to be provided at the lowest possible cost to all, and to make it easy to recycle.

Q: What happens to the Blue Bags when they are emptied?
A: The contents from the blue and clear bags are separated and placed on a conveyor where they are hand sorted by product type. The bags are baled, and shipped for recycling.

Q: Where do my recyclable materials go?
A: The sorted materials you recycled are shipped to markets wherever they are available. Most of the paper, cardboard, metal, and plastic is shipped to mills in BC where it is made into newspaper, tissues, metal items and new cardboard boxes.
