Landfill Gas Flaring Begins

Posted Friday, April 10, 2015

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has recently completed the construction of a new Landfill Gas Management System at the Greater Vernon Recycling and Disposal Facility (GVRDF). In accordance with the BC Landfill Gas Management Regulation, the RDNO is required to collect and destroy and/or utilize the gas in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Those visiting the site or passing by along Highway 97 may notice a tall flame near the operations building at the GVRDF. The gas extraction system and flame will not have any impact on customers using the GVRDF site or residents of the surrounding area. We will be continually monitoring the landfill gas management system and reporting carbon emission reductions annually to the Ministry of Environment.
