Water Main Flushing - Whitevale Water Utility

Posted Tuesday, May 10, 2016

Whitevale Water Utility The Regional District of North Okanagan wishes to inform customers of the Whitevale Water Utility that water main flushing will be undertaken on Wednesday May 18, 2016, and this activity may temporarily affect the quality of water delivered to homes.

Where and why are customers affected?

Flushing water from fire hydrants is a procedure that is carried out usually on an annual basis to remove accumulated sediments from the water system. As a precaution, all customers who receive water from the Whitevale Water Utility are being advised of possible reduced water quality while flushing is under way.

What does reduced water quality mean?

Reduced water quality means increased turbidity (cloudiness). This is temporary and will only affect the system while the flushing procedure is under way on May 18, 2016. If water use is necessary during this time, the following customers should exercise caution when using water for consumption purposes:

  • Young children
  • Elderly
  • People with weakened immune systems. (Customers who are unsure whether their immune system is compromised should discuss with a physician if they should always take these precautions).

For these customers, water intended for the following uses should be boiled for one minute:

  • drinking washing fruits and vegetables
  • making beverages or ice
  • brushing teeth

We strongly advise that you check your water before doing any water related household work such as laundry. Once flushing is complete, it may be necessary to run an outside tap until the water clears.
