Eco-Depot to Replace Annual Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

Posted Wednesday, September 9, 2015

For more than a decade, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has organized an annual Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up (HHWR). The event enabled RDNO residents to safely dispose of a wide range of hazardous materials. The HHWR was held in the fall in three locations: Vernon, Enderby and Lumby. There will be no HHWR in 2015 as the RDNO is finalizing arrangements to provide residents with a year-round HHW drop off facility. This facility, or ‘Eco Depot’ is expected to be open this fall.

For a number of years, the RDNO has been working to establish a permanent, year-round location for residents to drop off hazardous waste as well as other recyclable products. The objective in establishing an Eco Depot is to provide a single, convenient location for residents to drop off a wide range of recyclable or divertible products. It is expected that this will result in improved participation in recycling, waste diversion, decreased costs, as well as in protection of the environment.

A number of Regional Districts and municipalities in British Columbia have established Eco Depots to assist residents in disposing or recycling items managed under Extended Producer Responsibility Programs. Residents were quick to discover the benefits of having a ‘One Stop Drop’ for an ever increasing list of items managed under product stewardship programs that place an emphasis on protection of the environment from hazardous waste.
Establishment of an Eco Depot is one of the objectives in the RDNO Solid Waste Management Plan. Funding in the amount of $100,000 to establish the Eco Depot was provided through the federal Gas Tax program as a Regionally Significant Project.

Details regarding the location, hours of operation and items accepted at the RDNO Eco Depot will be provided once arrangements have been finalized and the facility is operational. For those residents who have been storing HHW in anticipation of the annual HHWR, the RDNO asks that you continue to store this material until the Eco Depot opens. Going forward, residents will have access to an enhanced level of service at a convenient, permanent, year round drop off facility.
