Grand Opening of Greater Vernon Athletics Park a great success

Posted Tuesday, September 29, 2015

The Greater Vernon Athletics Park saw over two-thousand visitors throughout the day at the grand opening of the park on Saturday. The mascot race was one of the highlights of the event, with Sniper, of the Vernon Vipers, coming out victorious. The mascot race also included a busy Bee, from Planet Bee, the Silver Star Fox, and Jopo of the Vernon Winter Carnival.

“The community participation was impressive, with over thirty different organizations on hand to showcase what they had to offer, and celebrate the new facility” said Rick Fairbairn, Chair of the Regional District Board.

“We had a wide range of activities to check out, from tai chi to live music, followed by football and lacrosse under the lights,” said Bob Fleming, Greater Vernon Advisory Committee member. “Everyone that I spoke to was excited to have this new recreation space to use.”

With the park now open, the public is encouraged to use the track or field at no charge from dawn to dusk. The track or field can also be booked for exclusive use, including into the evening with use of the lights, by contacting the Recreation Centre.
