Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, then Recycle

Let's shift our focus from recycling to rethinking our consumption, reducing our waste, and reusing items.

RDNO Recycling Drop Centres

The RDNO currently provides Recycling Drop Centres at all six of our facilities throughout the North Okanagan.

These Drop Centres are managed by the RDNO, and are funded by standard RDF tipping fees. They are not meant to replace Recycle BC depots or curbside collection services. It is important to note that the RDNO Recycling Drop Centres are separate from any Residential Recycling and Depot programs provided by Recycle BC.

Please note that effective January 1, 2019, RDNO Recycling Drop Centres will not accept the following items:

- Printed Paper - Paper Packaging
- Aluminum Containers - Tin Containers
- Cartons & Paper Cups - Plastic Containers
- Styrofoam - Glass Containers

These changes apply at all RDNO Recycling & Disposal Facilities, and Transfer Stations.

Alternate recycling options for the above-noted items are as follows:

  • Curbside Collection (Recycle B.C. & Commercial Programs)
  • Hire a Commercial Hauler
  • Utilize Private Depots

Why is this change happening?

The world’s largest recycling commodity purchasers have been adding strict regulations to the materials that they accept from foreign countries in recent years. The market for Blue Bag Recyclables has been significantly impacted by these policies.
Secondary Markets are too small to take the overflow of material that we are producing and are also insisting the loads have a contamination level of 0.5%. The blue bag recycling dropped off at RDNO RDFs is consistently at a contamination level of 3%.
Because of the restrictions, the current contractor that picks up the blue bag recycling from RDNO RDFs will no longer be able to accept material from these facilities, except Old Corrugated Cardboard (OCC), as of January 1, 2019.

Residential Curbside Collection

The RDNO does not provide curbside collection. The Residential Recycling Programs in Armstrong, Coldstream, Enderby, Lumby, Vernon, and Electoral Areas “B”, “C”, and parts of “D” and “F” are maintained by Recycle BC.

Emterra Environmental collects Printed Paper and Packaging (PPP) from single family residences and select Multi-Family Complexes.
