Solid Waste (Garbage)

Recycling and Disposal Facilities (RDFs)

Landfills across North America must handle an ever-increasing amount of waste from a society of constant consumers and disposers, challenging regional waste managers to find new and innovative ways to conserve landfill space to accommodate future disposal needs.

In the North Okanagan, our landfills are called Recycling & Disposal Facilities (RDFs) because we aim to maximize the diversion of recyclable materials while minimizing the amount of waste buried at our landfill sites. Landfills are expensive to operate, and even more costly to close. Please help us conserve landfill space by removing reusable, compostable & recyclable items from the waste stream.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) owns or co-leases seven RDFs and two municipal solid waste transfer stations.  Tipping fees charged at the Greater Vernon, Armstrong-Spallumcheen, Lumby & Area “D” and Cherryville & Area “E” RDFs fund the operations and capital budget of this program. Closure plans were approved for the Ashton Creek and Pottery Road facilities.

Every year, more than 41,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste is disposed at North Okanagan RDFs.   Despite population growth and increased recycling efforts, the amount disposed is expected to remain fairly static at 0.5 tonnes per capita per year.

Curbside Garbage Collection

Please contact your local municipality for information regarding curbside garbage collection as the Regional District of North Okanagan does not provide this service. If you live in Electoral Areas “B,” “C,” “D,” “E,” or “F” you may choose to set up an individual subscription with a collection company to provide curbside garbage collection.
