Styrofoam Recycling Program

Recycle Tech XT200

The Vernon and District Association for Community Living (Venture Centre) with financial support from the Kalamalka and Tri Lakes Rotary Clubs and the RDNO, acquired an Expanded Polystyrene Styrofoam densification machine.

The “Recycle Tech XT200” is capable of reducing the volume of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and Expanded Polyethylene (EPE) by a factor of 90:1.

The unit can process approximately 90kg of material per hour and produces a dense, plastic resin that can be recycled.

Spray foam and extruded polystyrene insulation (rigid Styrofoam insulation) cannot be processed.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) currently manages a Styrofoam Recycling Program at two of its Recycling and Disposal Facilities; the Greater Vernon Recycling and Disposal Facility (GVRDF) and the Armstrong Spallumcheen Recycling and Disposal Facility (ASRDF).  Diverting Styrofoam from disposal preserves valuable landfill capacity.

The RDNO strongly encourages residents to utilize the Recycle BC Printed Paper and Packaging (PPP) depots for free Styrofoam drop off.  The Recycle BC depots in the North Okanagan are in Vernon at Interior Freight and Bottle Depot at 4205 24th Street and Venture Training Centre at 4240 Alexis Park Drive, in Armstrong at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Bottle Depot at 3730 Pleasant Valley Boulevard, and in Lumby at the Venture Bottle Depot located at 1818 Miller Street. There is no charge for residents to drop off Styrofoam to these locations for recycling. Please visit the Recycle BC website for all materials accepted at Recycle BC depots.

Businesses are currently not part of the Recycle BC PPP Program, and are encouraged to make use of the Styrofoam recycling options at the GVRDF and ASRDF.

Styrofoam items, including clean meat trays, egg cartons, packing peanuts and blocks are accepted at the GVRDF or ASRDF for the recycling and disposal fee of $95/tonne with a minimum charge of $4. Styrofoam insulation, Styrofoam film and spray foam are not accepted. All stickers, tape, plastic and metal must be removed prior to drop-off.

Please note that the Styrofoam recycling program is a drop-off service only. Although many Styrofoam products are marked with recycling symbols, these items are not accepted at the six Recycling and Disposal Facility Drop Centre locations, and must NOT be placed in blue or clear bags for drop off in the Blue Bag Recyclable Materials bin.
