Why is it important to license my dog?

  • Reunite quicker with a lost pet: When you license your pet, you become part of a network of responsible dog owners in the community. Lost pets with valid licence tags equipped with HomeSafe™ are reunited with their families faster and easier.
  • It’s cost-effective: If your dog is found roaming the neighbourhood and doesn’t have a licence, dog control won’t have any contact information for you and will bring the dog to the pound. In addition to an impounding fee, dog owners are charged a daily boarding fee for each day their dog stays at the pound. If your dog is wearing a license tag, you will be contacted immediately and can prevent boarding fees from adding up.
  • Provides services to our community: Dog licensing fees help pay for the costs of providing dog control services in our community. Dog control is an important service that responds to emergencies that involve dogs, such as dog attacks or roaming dogs. Dog control even responds to motor vehicle accidents when dogs are in the car and care for the dog if the owner is taken to the hospital.
  • It’s the law: Under Bylaw No. 2466, all dogs must wear an official licence, and this licence must be renewed annually.

Benefits included with your dog licence:

  • Access to the free HomeSafe™ 24/7 lost pet service
  • A selection of over 160 unique designer tag options that double as your pet’s official RDNO licence. DocuPet donates 20% of the proceeds from designer tags to the Vernon and District SPCA.
  • A central dashboard for your pet’s medical records and information
  • A quick and easy online solution for purchasing and renewing your pet’s licence
