Open Burning:
Open Burning runs from October 31, 2011 to April 30, 2012.

Open burning in the BX/Swan Lake and Silver Star Fire Protection Areas is regulated in part by the RDNO Open Burning – Fire Regulation Bylaw No. 2514, 2011 - 435Kb PDF. Residents who wish to burn permitted materials in these areas must obtain an Open Burning Permit from RDNO prior to burning.

Burning Alternatives:
There are many alternatives to burning including chipping, flail mowing, or dropping off materials at RDNO Recycling and Disposal Facilities for composting.

  Venting Index Information

Prior to burning obtain Venting Index Information at:

  • Provincial toll-free line: 1-888-281-2992 (press 3 for Thompson-Okanagan)
  • On- line: www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/forecast
  • RDNO: 250-550-3700 (Mon.-Fri.8:00 a. m. – 4:30 p.m.) except holidays

Open Burning Permits

The Address, Permit Number and Issue Date of all Open Burning Permits issued by RDNO for the BX-Swan Lake and Silver Star Fire Protection Areas will be updated daily on weekdays. Anyone who observes Open Burning taking place at an address within the BX-Swan Lake or Silver Star Fire Protection Areas without a valid Open Burning Permit is urged to contact the RDNO, or the BX-Swan Lake or Silver Star Fire Departments, immediately.

Open Burning Checklist

1. Confirm your eligibility:
Residents with properties larger than 1 hectare (2.47 acres) located within the BX/Swan Lake and Silver Star Fire Protection Areas are eligible to apply for a permit. If you are unsure whether your property falls within these Fire Protection Areas, please check this map (PDF) or list of addresses (PDF) if you are unable to identify your property on the map.

2. Download and Print the Burning Permit Application (PDF) or visit the RDNO Office at 9848 Aberdeen Road, Coldstream to obtain an Application.

3. Complete, sign and return the Burning Permit Application:

  • In Person: RDNO Office at 9848 Aberdeen Road, Coldstream
  • By E-mail: open.burning@rdno.ca
  • By Fax: 250-550-3701

IMPORTANT: If applying via e-mail or fax, please allow 2 business days for processing. BE SURE TO SPECIFY a return e-mail address or fax number.

4. Upon receipt of your valid permit, you may burn on days when the Venting Index is 55 or better (Good). Prior to burning obtain Venting Index Information at:
