Name that Garden!
The new regional environmental demonstration garden needs a name! The garden, located between the Okanagan Science Centre and the Skate Board Park in Polson Park will open this spring and community groups involved in the project want to give North Okanagan residents a chance to name the garden.
“The Committee is thrilled to have this project off the ground and we would love to have a resident name this new park as a way of integrating the park into our community. We are excited to see the names this contest will generate!” says Nicole Marzinzik, Waste Reduction Coordinator for the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO).
The garden, which will demonstrate drought-tolerant and organic gardening, composting, plants of interest to First Nations people, and other cultural and environmental principles, will officially open in the spring of 2006. The grand opening and a giant plant sale are scheduled for Sunday, May 7, 2006.
Residents should keep in mind the following themes when considering a name for the park:
- Waste reduction;
- Composting;
- Water stewardship;
- Water-wise and pesticide-free gardening;
- Native planting, etc.
The entry deadline for the naming contest is February 15, 2006. Residents are asked to submit their ideas by fax (550-3701), by mail (9848 Aberdeen Road, Coldstream, BC V1B 2K9) or by email to nicole.marzinzik@rdno.ca.
The name of the garden will be built into an arch at the garden gate. Prizes for the person submitting the winning name include a family membership to the Okanagan Science Centre, a backyard composter, punch pass for the Recreation Centre, some other great prizes and of course, acknowledgement at the garden.
Partners in this project include the RDNO, the City of Vernon, Greater Vernon Services, the Okanagan Science Centre, Allan Brooks Nature Centre and the Sustainable Environment Network Society (SENS).
