January 5, 2009
The New Year is underway and with this, the Regional District of North Okanagan 2009 Recycling Collection Guide is now available! The recycling calendar is delivered via Canada Post during the first week of January. If you have chosen not to have unaddressed mail delivered to your home, you will not receive this calendar. The calendar is available at municipal offices throughout the North Okanagan and online at www.rdno.ca. The calendar has a new look this year, but this has not affected any collection days. If you are new to the program or area and are not sure which day your collection is please contact the Regional District of North Okanagan at 250-550-3700.
The 2009 Recycling Collection Guide is a means to track when your recycling day is throughout the year, and also offers contact information for various reuse and recycle options in the North Okanagan. Each month also showcases a topic of environmental interest. This year’s calendar offers tips to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as tips for water conservation and water leak detection in the home, air quality protection and waste reduction options. By implementing simple strategies to reduce where possible, North Okanagan residents are demonstrating leadership and protecting the beautiful communities we call home.
Waste Reduction Coordinator Karmen Peace reminds all residents to help reduce contamination of recyclables by not including syringes, glass or Styrofoam in the Blue Bags. Peace explains, “Recyclable commodity sales do require that a standard of cleanliness and segregation be met. When garbage, hazardous materials, and shards of glass are mixed with other recyclable material, the quality of each commodity becomes degraded and the sale of those materials is difficult. Not only can this material be rejected by a purchasing company, staff can be injured in the process.” Despite fluctuations in the value of recyclable commodities, residents are encouraged to continue participating in the Curbside Blue Bag Collection Program as there are no changes to what is accepted.
Thank you North Okanagan residents for continuing to support waste reduction initiatives and for your assistance in reaching our 50% reduction of waste going to area landfills.
