COLDSTREAM, BC – The Regional District of North Okanagan has been developing
and changing quickly, with a population that is increasing, an economy that is in
transition, and a growth pattern that will continue to impact our communities, the natural
landscape, and our quality of life. With the growth challenges ahead of us, both within
our communities and the Region as a whole, we must plan for our future development
with a common vision guiding us.
The Regional Growth Strategy is a vision of the region, adopted by the Regional Board
and supported by member municipalities, to establish the economic, social and
environmental objectives that promote healthy communities. The Regional Growth
Strategy expresses how communities have agreed to work together to enhance our
regional quality of life and social well-being.
Growth and change are happening and growth impacts cross jurisdictional boundaries.
The benefits of developing a common regional vision of our future include:
- A “Made in the North Okanagan” solutions to growth over the long-term
- Focus on local knowledge and expertise to identify issues and develop
solutions
- Strengthening relationships between our local governments, First Nations,
and/or the Province
- Framework for local and provincial decision-making and provincial infrastructure
investment
- Opportunities for broad community participation
The Regional District of North Okanagan initiated the Regional Growth Strategy process
in 2007 and is currently in the first phase of the project. The development of the
Regional Growth Strategy involves the cooperation and coordination of the Region’s six
member municipalities, including the City of Vernon, District of Coldstream, Village of
Lumby, City of Enderby, City of Armstrong, and Township of Spallumcheen, and the five
Electoral Areas (B, C, D, E and F). The Regional Growth Strategy Bylaw that will result
from the process will provide a common direction on growth that will be reflected in each
Official Community Plan in the North Okanagan. Working together, we can forge a
common vision of the North Okanagan that will preserve the very attributes that make
this a great place to live, work, and play.
