COLDSTREAM, BC – The Regional District of North Okanagan is nearing completion of the
Transportation Options for Rural Residents Study, a community visioning and planning exercise to improve transportation options for North Okanagan’s rural residents. The Study will highlight options available to rural residents so that they may fulfill their daily transportation needs through alternatives to single-occupant vehicle travel, such as cycling, carpooling and transit. It will also suggest strategies that allow rural residents to eliminate a portion of their daily transportation, while still retaining access to employment, school, services and recreation.
“We are learning that there is quite an appetite for non-automobile travel in North Okanagan’s rural areas,” notes transportation consultant Daniel Casey. “But a lack of awareness of the opportunities and poor coordination between the various modes is causing rural residents to rely heavily on single-occupant vehicle travel. One of the key outcomes of the study will be exploring ways to promote and better coordinate the transportation options available.”
Electoral Area residents are encouraged to attend an open house held Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 6:00pm, at the Regional District of North Okanagan offices in Coldstream. The open house will allow Electoral Area residents to interact with the project team, share thoughts on the options identified, and suggest any further actions to improve transportation in rural areas.
