COLDSTREAM, BC – The Xerindipity demonstration garden located next to the Okanagan Science Centre is home to spring and summer workshops again this year. The first workshop of the season, ‘Square Meter Gardening’ is ideal for residents with small yards or for those that want to streamline the gardening process. Although the plot size may appear too small for regular vegetable plantings, it is optimized for season long production,” states Waste Reduction Coordinator, Karmen Peace.
Dave Weatherill, owner of Briteland Agricultural Services and Supplies Ltd. recently hosted a Square Foot Gardening seminar featuring originator and author Mel Bartholomew, and will lead the session on Saturday. Those in attendance will learn how to construct the plot and how to maximize production of various vegetables and flowers.
Xerindipity, which demonstrates drought-tolerant plant varieties, organic gardening, and composting principles, is open to visitors during regular Polson Park hours beginning May 1st. “Visitors are welcome to walk through the garden and view the plants suited to the North Okanagan climate and gain ideas for backyard composting,” states Waste Reduction Coordinator Karmen Peace. “The site has two vermicomposters, and three typical backyard composters on display,” adds Peace.
Xerindipity is designed for tours and information sessions on topics related to xeriscaping, pesticide free gardening, water conservation, composting, and natural lawn care. “Now that the demonstration garden is nearing completion, garden workshops are ideally suited for the space”, says Peace. Take in the monthly Saturday workshops beginning this Saturday. Join Dave Weatherill on Saturday, May 2nd at 1:00 p.m. at Xerindipity to learn about how you can start your own square meter garden plot with ease.
There are more opportunities for learning and relaxing at the Xerindipity garden this summer. Upcoming workshops include: Who will water the garden?- Irrigation Tips and Tricks June 13th, Composting Made Easy July 4th, Xeriscaping August 8th, and Garden Harvesting September 12th.
