COLDSTREAM, BC – The Xerindipity demonstration garden located next to the Okanagan Science Centre, is hosting its third workshop this summer. The workshop, “Composting Made Easy” is ideal for residents starting to compost for the first time or for composting veterans. Dave Weatherill, owner of Briteland Agricultural Sales and Services Ltd. will be leading the workshop and adds, “Residents in the area recognize the value in putting less in the trash can and more in the composter to limit the amount of food waste going to the landfill. There are product shapes and styles available to suite just about any space requirement out there.”
The Regional District of North Okanagan’s goal of 50% reduction in materials going to area landfills would be much easier to maintain if every resident managed their own organic material at home. “Typical household refuse can be approximately 30% organic and could be easily managed at home,” states Waste Reduction Coordinator Karmen Peace. “A common misconception is that the organic material easily breaks down in the landfill and is best placed in the garbage. The very nature of the landfill makes decomposition a very slow, ineffective process and the release of gases also adds to current concerns surrounding global warming.”
Xerindipity, which demonstrates drought-tolerant, organic gardening, composting principles, as well as other environmental concepts, is open to visitors during regular Polson Park hours. “Visitors are welcome to walk through the garden and view the plants suited to the North Okanagan climate,” states Peace. “The site also has two vermicomposters, and three typical backyard composters on display,” adds Peace. The interest in composting is definitely growing in the region, and it is encouraging to see people purchasing and designing composters for their own backyard use.
