Garden Harvest Focus for Last Xerindipity Workshop – September 12, 2009
COLDSTREAM, BC – The Xerindipity demonstration garden located next to the Okanagan Science Centre is hosting its final workshop this summer. The workshop, “Saving and Storing the Garden Harvest” is ideal for beginner gardeners or those that have had a bumper crop and are not sure how to preserve the produce. Special guests of the Okanagan Science Centre Landed Learning Program will be leading the workshop and will be offering their expertise for the afternoon. Okanagan Science Centre Executive Director Sandi Dixon adds, “There are many techniques available to food producers who wish to keep the fruits of their labour going throughout the year. Freezing, drying and canning all allow for the produce to remain a healthy option even when the snow is on the ground.”
Xerindipity, which demonstrates drought-tolerant, organic gardening, composting principles, as well as other environmental concepts, is open to visitors during regular Polson Park hours until mid October. “Visitors are welcome to walk through the garden and view the plants suited to the North Okanagan climate,” states Waste Reduction Coordinator Karmen Peace. “The site has new signage on display and a newly constructed greenhouse suitable for square foot gardening; a must have for any avid gardener,” adds Peace. The interest in local food production and gardening is definitely growing in the region, and it is wonderful to see people planting fruits and vegetables in a variety of garden spaces.
Join us on Saturday, September 12th at 1:00 p.m. at Xerindipity to learn how you can prepare for the upcoming winter and enjoy your produce year round.
