The fifth annual Household Hazardous Waste Round Up is taking place on Saturday, October 3rd from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Okanagan College parking lot at 7000 College Way in Vernon, and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Enderby and Lumby Fire Halls. Bring your household hazardous waste for safe disposal and recycling. Old pesticides, solvents, chemicals, paint, oil, or corrosive and toxic cleaners; anything with an explosive, flammable or poisonous label can be dropped off.
The Household Hazardous Waste Round Up is for residents only, and only containers up to 20 litres will be accepted. Waste from commercial sources will not be accepted.
Residents should take precautions when transporting these goods to the event. Here are a few simple steps to follow:
1. Make sure containers have tightly attached lids to prevent leaks;
2. If the content of the container is known, attach labels, so staff know what they are handling;
3. Pack in a sturdy box, place upright, secure boxes to prevent spills and line your trunk or truck bed, if desired. Do not pack materials in large plastic bags;
4. Keep items in the trunk of your car, away from children, pets or food products; and
5. Containers that are empty and dry can go into your regular household garbage.
As was done last year, electronic waste items will not be accepted at the round up events. Year-round options for electronic waste recycling are available at Venture Training Centre on Alexis Park Drive, Interior Freight and Bottle on 24th Avenue in Vernon, and at the Armstrong/Spallumcheen Bottle Depot on Pleasant Valley Road in Armstrong. For a complete listing of Encorp accepted items go to www.encorp.ca.
Year-round drop off of some pesticides, solvents and flammable liquids is available at Chasers Bottle Depot on 31st Street. For a complete listing of accepted items, go to www.productcare.org. For paint recycling, take your leftovers to Chasers in Vernon, Armstrong Collision and Glass in Armstrong or KBM Autoworks and Towing in Lumby. Residents can also pick up paint at these locations.
These events would not be possible without the dedicated volunteers from the Enderby and Vernon Lion Clubs, and the fire-fighters from the Enderby and Lumby fire halls.
