Hazardous Waste Wrap Up

COLDSTREAM, BC – Saturday’s Household Hazardous Waste Events held at the Okanagan College parking lot, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and at the Enderby and Lumby Fire halls from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 were an indication that residents are keen to recycle and keep toxic waste out of our local landfills!

Hazco, the main contractor of the event, filled 80 drums, 5 kegs and 20 pails with flammables, poisons, corrosives, and a myriad of other unknown chemicals. In addition, the following companies donated their services to collect the materials listed below:

EnviroWest:

3115 litres of waste oil
150 litres solvent
910 litres of antifreeze
0.5 drum oil filters
669.15 kg of used oil plastic containers

Battery Doctors:

61 automotive batteries
339 lbs household batteries
100 litres of pesticides
100 litres of solvents
234 litres of aerosols
12,470 litres of paint

“We are pleased residents took the time to recycle and safely dispose of their hazardous wastes. Volumes are up significantly from last year despite the year round depots for paint, pesticides, fuel, batteries, oil/filters/containers, and antifreeze,” said Karmen Morgan, Waste Reduction Coordinator.

“We had volunteers help us out at the three locations. Our volunteers came from the Enderby and Vernon Lions Clubs, RDNO staff, and the fire-fighters from the Enderby and Lumby Fire Halls. The staff from Hazco, the Battery Doctors and EnviroWest also worked hard throughout the day to ensure residents could drive through quickly and the event was well managed.”

If you missed this year’s Round Up, take advantage of the year-round disposal options for many of the common items brought to our event. Chasers Bottle Depot accepts most household pesticides, solvents, paint and flammable liquids from residents at no charge, anytime of year. Paint can also be taken to Armstrong Collision and Glass in Armstrong or KBM Autoworks and Towing in Lumby. Encorp Pacific accepts electronic waste year-round at Venture Training Centre and Interior Freight and Bottle Depot in Vernon, and at the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Bottle Depot in Armstrong. Call first to ensure your electronic item will be accepted at these locations or go online to www.encorp.ca for a complete listing. Batteries are accepted at all RDNO Recycling and Disposal Facilities (household and automotive), Canadian Tire and Vernon Battery in Vernon, Cherry Wreckers-Recyclers in Lumby, and Canadian 4X4 Recyclers in Enderby (see the Reuse, Recycle Directory at www.rdno.ca for more listings).

A big thank you goes out to all North Okanagan residents who took the time to recycle and safely dispose of hazardous wastes!
