COLDSTREAM, BC - The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) would like to remind residents that the spring 2010, free yard and garden waste drop off period at all RDNO Recycling and Disposal Facilities (RDFs) runs from March 15th to April 30th.
Yard waste and prunings less than 20 cm in diameter are accepted free-of-charge at the Greater Vernon, Armstrong/Spallumcheen, Lumby, Kingfisher, and Cherryville Recycling and Disposal Facilities. This program is for residential yard and garden waste self-hauled by residents only.
“This program is offered to give residents an opportunity to dispose of excess yard waste free of charge during spring clean up. Last year, the free yard waste drop off period was very busy so we ask RDF customers for their patience and cooperation when visiting RDFs.” says Karmen Morgan, Waste Reduction Coordinator. “RDF staff will move customers through as quickly as possible and we ask that customers follow the posted signs and direction from facility staff.
Bags and boxes containing yard and garden waste must not be left in the yard waste drop off area and must be removed and recycled in the bins provided. Materials accepted include grass, leaves, pine needles and cones, windfall fruit, branches and plantings. Please do not deposit rocks, concrete, plastic, or household refuse in the yard waste piles. These materials contaminate the pile and make it unusable for composting.
The tipping fee for yard waste outside of the designated free period is $20 per metric tonne (two cents per kilogram) at all RDFs. Look for upcoming local municipal yard waste programs offered for spring chipping, leaf exchange, curbside pick-up and drop off locations in local newspapers. A listing of other programs offered in the RDNO can also be found at www.rdno.ca.
Hours of operation for each of the RDNO Recycling and Disposal Facilities are posted on the Regional District of North Okanagan web site. Morgan adds, “Please remember, all loads going to a Recycling and Disposal Facility must be tarped and secured. Loads will be carefully monitored to ensure compliance and customers could face a fine if their load is not properly secured.”
