Backyard Composter Sale Returns!

COLDSTREAM, BC – The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) backyard composter sale is back! This spring, one thousand, “Earth Machine” composters will once again be up for grabs. Many residents were disappointed in 2008 when the available composters were sold out in less than 3 hours. If you want to avoid disappointment this time around, you can pre-order your Earth Machine. The pre-sale for the RDNO subsidized, backyard composters runs from Monday, March 22nd to Friday, April 23rd this year. Residents that pre-order their composter are guaranteed to get one. The pre-sale price for the Earth Machines is $35. Earth Machines can be pre-ordered in person at the RDNO office located at 9848 Aberdeen Road in Coldstream from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The regular sale takes place on Saturday, April 24th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (or until the units sell out) in the RDNO office parking lot. The day of sale price is $40. Pre-ordered Earth Machines are available for pick up on April 24th only.

“We know the interest in composting is growing in the region and are happy to make the composters available at a low price,” says Karmen Morgan, RDNO Waste Reduction Coordinator. “We are doing a pre-sale this year to make sure those residents who want a composter, get one.”

Compostable materials comprise upwards of 50% of an average household’s refuse. Composting is one way to significantly reduce this waste going into landfills. “There is a common misconception that organics placed in the garbage will be composted at the landfill.” states Morgan. “Composting is best done at home where moisture and air are available to the pile. Materials disposed of in a landfill are covered and compacted making it impossible for the organics to be utilized. This material not only takes up space, but it also contributes to the production of landfill gas at our facilities.” adds Morgan. “Removing kitchen waste cuts down on the amount of garbage produced from a household, and the nutrient-rich soil amendment can be a welcome addition to lawns and gardens.”

For residents that are new to composting, the RDNO will be hosting a free composting workshop at the Xerindipity demonstration garden, next to the Okanagan Science Centre, Saturday, May 1st from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Be sure to come in and pre-purchase your new Earth Machine and avoid disappointment, as quantities are limited. There is a limit of two (2) composters per household and cash, cheque, and debit are accepted methods of payment at the RDNO office for the pre-purchase option. Those interested in purchasing a composter on April 24th, will be required to pay in cash for a maximum of two (2) Earth Machines. For more information, contact the RDNO at 250-550-3700.
