COLDSTREAM, BC - At the May 5, 2010 Board Meeting the Board resolved that staff be directed to develop a plan towards an appropriate level of water restrictions that mitigates effects of water restrictions to all users; and further in light of recent changes in overall system water levels, that Stage 3 Water Restrictions implementation be deferred for two (2) weeks pending further evaluation of water levels.
The Greater Vernon Water Utility (GVWU) of the Regional District of North Okanagan remains at Stage 3 Water Restriction, but due to recent precipitation and increased flow at the Headgates Intake at Duteau Creek, a slight reprieve of Stage 3 Water Restrictions will be permitted. This delay of Stage 3 Water Restrictions enforcement will continue for two (2) weeks, at which time an examination of reservoir water levels will be undertaken, which will include spillage measurement over the Headgates Intake. Following data review, RDNO staff will advise the Board of Directors as to the application of a Stage 3 Water Restriction.
While there will be a short term reprieve for all customers, GVWU advises that a Stage 3 Water Restriction alert is still in effect and requests that all users remain aware of the low snowpack, low reservoir levels and the impact that a hot summer will have on future water availability. The pristine, natural water resources in the North Okanagan are a vital component to current and future community needs and conservation must be practiced throughout this summer. All GVWU customers are encouraged, at all time, to attempt to minimize water consumption to the Stage 3 Water Restrictions level or lower.
There are many ways to minimize water consumption during the summer and winter months. Water is a precious resource that is vital for everyone. There are many demands, both residential and commercial, placed on local water systems and it is imperative that water be available to all sectors throughout the year. Conservation will be expected and monitored in the coming weeks.
