WHAT IS SUSTAINABLITY?
The definition of sustainability can depend on the point of view of the person using it. For example, a producer may see sustainable agriculture as farming in a way that ensures the land continues to meet his or her long-term needs. Some business owners may define sustainable as increasing profits, reducing environmental impacts, and improving the lives of people. Others may describe sustainable as living in a way that does not disturb nature.
One of the best definitions of sustainability was developed by the United Nation's World Commission on Environment and Development, in which sustainable development was “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own need." Sustainability integrates economic, social (including cultural), and environmental aspects that must be addressed and coordinated to ensure the long-term viability and enjoyment of our Region. Whatever definition is used, it is important that we all understand that our decisions and actions today will directly impact the world we will leave for the future.
