Flooding General Information
The North Okanagan can experience two types of floods. The first type occurs when waters in lakes, creeks and rivers rise as a result of heavy snow melt run-off and rain in the spring and early summer. This is referred to as “General Flooding”. The other type of flooding, “Flash Floods”, result from exceptional weather conditions and can occur at almost anytime. There is little defense against flash floods except ensuring culverts and discharge passages are kept clean and free of obstructions.
Owners/Residents are responsible for all measures required for flood protection of private property. In cases of acute emergency, the Provincial Emergency Program administers the Disaster Financial Assistance Program that may provide flood relief.
For more information about Disaster Financial Assistance please visit the Provincial Emergency Program website.
A local state of emergency may be declared by the Local Authority (Municipality/RDNO ) during significant flooding events to aid in the response and recovery process.
The RDNO may also activate it’s Emergency Operations Centre to manage and support flood response/recovery efforts outside of municipal boundaries.
