Returning Home After a Disaster

Following a flood

  1. Listen for news reports to learn whether the water supply is safe to drink. Your local Health Authority will release Boil Water Advisories as necessary. Find your local Health Authority.
  2. Avoid floodwaters; water may be contaminated or may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines
  3. Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe

Destroy all contaminated foods
Floodwater is contaminated and can make food and drinks unsafe to consume.

  1. Non-liquid foods, including cereals, flour, shortening & spices
  2. Packaged food and meats (fresh and cured)
  3. Canned goods (if damaged or leaking),
  4. Bottled foods, including home preserves
  5. Bottled drinks (contamination can seep under the edge of the cap)
  6. Fresh vegetables and produce

Have your electrical system checked and call the gas company
Before you turn on electrical switches or electrical equipment, have them checked by a qualified electrician. Call the gas company to have them turn your gas back on.

Find out about insurance
Contact your insurance agency about any damages. Information about flood recovery and assistance programs will be made available or contact your local government for more information.
