Recycling & Disposal Facilities (RDFs)

The RDNO owns three operational and three closed RDFs in the region and is the co-permittee/leasee of one RDF. All seven RDFs require an Operational Certificate or Permit from the Ministry of Water, Air, and Land Protection, and the four landfill sites require Operating and Closure Plans (O&C Plans) approved by the same Ministry. O&C Plans have been approved for the Armstrong/Spallumcheen RDF and the Lumby RDF, and Closure Plans have been approved for the Ashton Creek and Pottery Road facilities.

Tipping fees charged at each site pay for the entire operations and capital budget for the program (user pay system).

A total of about 41,400 tonnes of municipal solid waste are disposed at the six RDFs each year and it is expected that this quantity will remain fairly static even as the population grows and recycling increases in the Region (0.50t/capita/yr).

Transfer Stations
The RDNO currently owns two municipal solid waste transfer stations at Silver Star Mountain and Kingfisher at Mabel Lake.

The Silver Star site is open 7 days per week, 24 hours per day and accepts only soft garbage (no construction waste or large items) and recyclable material (only cardboard, paper, tin cans, glass jars, and aluminum). The RDNO contracts a hauler to transfer the refuse and the recyclable material to local facilities.

The Kingfisher facility is open as listed below and accepts all household refuse except that which is prohobitied at all RDNO RDFs (special, liquid and hazardous waste).
