The Residential Drop Off facility (RDO) is conveniently located directly east of the Greater Vernon Recycling and Disposal Facility (GVRDF) scalehouse. Self haulers will no longer have to drive to the active tipping face to dispose of their refuse. Both refuse and selected recyclable materials can be placed into designated, clearly marked bins, which will then be hauled to the active tipping face by GVRDF operators.
The RDO represents a significant improvement in safety for self haulers who will no longer have to drive to the active tipping face to dispose of their refuse. Potential conflicts between GVRDF equipment, large commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles will be greatly reduced. Customers will also be able to avoid poor or changing road conditions as the RDO is completely paved.
The RDO consists of five waste disposal bays, each of which can accommodate two vehicles at a time. At any given time, three of the disposal bays will be designated as “GARBAGE” bays, with the two other bays designated as either “METAL”, “CLEAN WOOD”, “DIRTY WOOD” or “YARD & GARDEN WASTE” depending on the time of year and activity at the GVRDF.
Customers wishing to use the RDO will have to go through the GVRDF scale prior to accessing the RDO. Once customers have dropped off their refuse, they will be required to go over the GVRDF scale again and will be required to pay the appropriate tipping fee.
In addition to the new RDO, a new recyclable materials drop off area has been established to the south of the RDO. Customers with Blue Bag recyclables, batteries, passenger and light truck tires and propane tanks will be able to drop off these items prior to going through the GVRDF scale.
The RDO will be monitored by an attendant who will direct traffic and direct customers to the appropriate bins. With the addition of the RDO, GVRDF operations staff will closely monitor what customers are disposing and clarify what is appropriate for each bin. This will enable the RDNO to recover more recyclable materials than ever before.
The RDO has been under construction since the fall of 2007. The RDNO would like to thank the customers of the GVRDF for their patience during the construction period.
The RDO was constructed at a cost of approximately $700,000 with a large portion of the funding through the Federal Gas Tax program.
