While most of us don’t spend much time thinking about where our garbage goes other than on garbage day, it is time to do just that. The Solid Waste and Recycling Department is conducting its 5 year review of the Solid Waste Management Plan this year, as mandated by the province. The current plan contains a number of philosophies and initiatives designed to help achieve a 50% reduction in the amount of waste disposed per capita and it’s time to take a second look at it.
The fundamental goal of the review is to finalize a new strategic and operational plan for the next 5 years. The review has two phases; initially it involves a review of the current plan to evaluate the status of existing goals, projects and policies. In other words, where are we at? Have we accomplished what we set out to do? What other needs and opportunities exist today?
The second phase of the review involves evaluating and recommending programs, technologies, and actions to deal with outstanding solid waste management issues. For instance, what new waste reduction goal(s) would our community like to achieve in the short term and the long term? What new and/or improved programs will help us achieve our goals and reduce the amount of garbage going to local landfills?
We anticipate the review will be complete by late 2007.
As part of updating the provincially mandated plan, stakeholders must be provided opportunity to comment and make recommendations. Stakeholders include other Regional District departments, municipalities, sectors such as agricultural and economic development, and residents. Public input is critical during Phase Two, which is anticipated to begin Fall 2007. If you are interested in providing input, please feel free to let us know at any time. Your opinions and ideas are highly valued. We hope to identify key partnerships that can increase efficiencies. Please let us know how we can make it easy for you to share your thoughts.
The Solid Waste Management Plan is important because it affects spending plans for households, local government, and businesses, and impacts the local economy and jobs. Of course, it also affects the environment - everything from recycling options to greenhouse gas emissions.
