UPDATE: January 17, 2022, 12:00 PM

Greater Vernon Water advises customers in the Duteau Water Supply service area that a Precautionary Water Quality Advisory (WQA) is in effect until sampling results confirm that the drinking water is safe. The WQA is in effect due to an emergency repair in Lavington (Coldstream) that caused extremely low flows at the Duteau Water Treatment Plant impacting treatment. While all of the water was treated with chlorine and clarification, the low flows resulted in some water in the system not receiving UV treatment.

This morning, crews repaired the failed air valve and have begun filling the water main again. For customers who were without water, service should return to normal by early this afternoon. Most Duteau customers were temporarily switched to the Kalamalka supply and will be returned to Duteau supply later today and are therefore impacted by the Precautionary WQA.

Greater Vernon Water expects that the Precautionary WQA will be rescinded by the end of the week if all samples results are good. When Duteau service is restored, you may experience some turbidity, which is normal. Please run your bathtub and other taps and appliances on cold water until the water runs clear.

PRECAUTIONARY WATER QUALITY ADVISORY – GREATER VERNON WATER – DUTEAU AREA

Greater Vernon Water (GVW), in conjunction with Interior Health, advises customers supplied by Greater Vernon Water are on a Precautionary Water Quality Advisory as of January 17, 2022.

What should affected customers do?

Until the Water Quality Advisory is rescinded, customers should exercise caution when using water for consumption purposes. All customers, especially young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems, may choose to boil their water for at least one minute when using for purposes, such as:

  • Drinking
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing fruits & vegetables to be eaten raw
  • Preparing any food
  • Mixing baby formula
  • Making beverages or ice

Why is this notice in place?

All customers who receive water from Greater Vernon Water in the areas identified on the attached map are on a Water Quality Advisory due to an emergency repair of a failed air release valve on a large transmission water main within the distribution system. The utility has made the necessary repair and is in the process of filling the main and resuming water service to customers.
