The Regional District of North Okanagan-Greater Vernon Water Utility, reminds our Agricultural customers that irrigation turn-offs will start on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. For those Agricultural customers requesting a late turn-off, there is a charge of $53.96 per hectare per month or part to a maximum of $300. An application for late turn-off for stock or spray watering must be completed and can be found on our website or picked up at our office. Requests for a late turn-off received after September 15, will be subject to a turn off fee of $25.00.

The Regional District of North Okanagan invites customers in the Greater Vernon Water supply area to complete the "Drought Economic Impact Assessment Questionnaire" - 90Kb PDF. This questionnaire was developed so that the businesses and the public can have input into solutions to minimize the impact to our community in times of drought. The City of Vernon and Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) are once again coordinating a Streamkeepers training course in the North Okanagan. The course was run in September 2009 and due to the high level of interest and attendance in this course we would like to offer it again.

Due to the cooling weather trend there has been a slowdown in the demand
to the water system. As a result, staff at the Regional District of North
Okanagan are directing water system operators to alter system operation in
central Coldstream.

Due to recent warm weather, water demands have increased significantly. Areas in the West Coldstream area that were temporarily switched to the East Kalamalka intake water source from Antwerp Springs are now on Duteau Creek source. The Duteau Creek and East Kalamalka Lake intake are both currently rated as “FAIR” therefore a “Water Quality Advisory” is in effect as directed by the Interior Health Authority. The water quality of Duteau Creek is described as colored, very soft and low alkalinity.

The objective of the "Lake Watch" and "River Watch" programs is to encourage those who
follow the rules while enjoying safe boating to be part of the solution when
observing those who do not follow the same rules. The program is not designed
to be punitive but to be proactive by assisting the education of all boaters to
do so in a safe and responsible manner.

The new Municipal Solid Waste Management Bylaw No. 2434, 2010 takes effect July 5th. The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) Board of Directors adopted this Bylaw at their April 21st meeting. The Bylaw is a consolidation of four current solid waste management bylaws and regulates the use of, and sets the fees for the recycling and disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) at RDNO Recycling and Disposal Facilities (RDFs).

The Regional District of North Okanagan – Greater Vernon Water [GVW], the District of Coldstream [DOC] and the Interior Health Authority [IHA] are informing the residents living east of Murphy Road and Highway 6 that the “Boil Water Notice” has been downgraded to a “Water Quality Advisory”.
Those sensitive customers with weakened immune systems, the elderly, children, or anyone who wants additional protection should continue to boil the water for one (1) minute when using the water for drinking, washing fruit and vegetables, making beverages or ice and brushing teeth.

Effective February 15th, 2010, the Regional District of North Okanagan will require the submission of engineered structural drawings and B1 & B2 schedules, Schedule P and Certificate of Insurance for the entire building structure(s). This must be included with all Building Permit applications to construct residential, commercial and industrial buildings and substantial building additions within the Silver Star Mountain Resort in Electoral Area “C”.
The Duteau Creek Watershed Assessment (45Kb PDF) has been prepared for Greater Vernon Water in response to a requirement on its Operating Permit by Interior Health Authority under the Drinking Water Protection Act. Recommendations from the Assessment will be used to build one of the first Watershed Protection Plans in the Okanagan. Greater Vernon Water /RDNO staff, Stakeholders and Government Ministries will partner to develop and implement a Source Protection Plan in 2009.
