We are putting together a Regional Growth Strategy that will set the direction for a sustainable North Okanagan. Youth are vital to every community and your ideas, dreams and issues are essential to the future of the North Okanagan. The Region’s youth are invited to write, draw and imagine about what they believe makes the North Okanagan a great place to live and what are the problems we need to look at. For the young photographers, media artists and videographers in the North Okanagan, get your equipment ready to showcase your talents in the multimedia contest. Our poster contest is calling to all our young (under 14) artists to start your creative juices flowing. Aspiring writers, sharpen your pencils and let the words flow for the creative writing contest. All you debaters and dialoguers out there, put your conversation abilities, survey skills and craft supplies to work preparing for the regional mapping contest. Always thought you had the greatest idea for making the North Okanagan an awesome place to live? Roll up your sleeves and tackle tough growth issues such as revitalizing downtowns, enhancing transportation, exploring sustainable development, or thinking about the future of our economy.
Don’t have the time to enter one of the contests. Still add your voice to the Regional Growth Strategy conversation and fill out the ‘My Sustainable North Okanagan’ Youth Survey. You just may win an iPod Nano.
The Regional Growth Strategy establishes a common vision for how the North Okanagan accommodates growth over the next 20 years. The strategy will provide guidance on a variety of key growth issues that directly affect the quality of life for all residents throughout the North Okanagan. Public input on the growth issues early in the process will assist in the development of the Regional Growth Strategy.
The Your Thoughts About…Age-Friendly Communities Survey is designed for North Okanagan residents 55+, although anyone, regardless of age, is encouraged to provide your thoughts about your community, the future of the Region and the issues that you feel are important. We want to hear from everyone, regardless of age. The survey is available on-line, at the Shubert Centre, at throughout the Region, as well as on-line at www.rdno.ca/rgs. The deadline is November 30, 2009.

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is looking for your help to divert an additional 10,000 tonnes per year from disposal at area landfills. Despite best efforts in 2008, the RDNO still buried over 55, 000 tonnes of municipal solid waste, some of which could have easily been diverted! Send us your best waste reduction ideas and solutions so we can reach the primary objective in the Regional District’s Solid Waste Management Plan; to reduce the amount of refuse disposed per capita to 50% or less of 1990 levels (0.55 tonnes/capita/year or less). In 2008, refuse disposed was 0.62 tonnes per capita.
Submissions will be accepted until February 1, 2010, should be no more than 500 words and can include pictures or graphs to clarify how the 10,000 tonne diversion will be met. All entries will be judged for content and program viability with the top three entries that are most likely to be used for future RDF planning will receive a PRIZE valued at $250! All submissions will be featured on the RDNO website and in a media publication.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Stream Clean-up and River’s Day event! We had a great turn out, fantastic weather and extremely talented entertainment to help us celebrate our rivers and streams this year.
The Adopt-a-Stream program is now up and running, and there are still sections available for adoption. In exchange for committing to clean up a section of stream bi-annually for two years, participants can take advantage of environmental training opportunities. Groups that adopt a stream will be recognized for their efforts through a sign erected near their section of stream! Check out the registration information for more details - 1.61MB PDF
