We live in one of the most breathtaking regions in Canada - the North Okanagan. With its rolling hills, sparkling teal lakes, and sunny climate, it's a place we’re proud to call home. But behind the beauty lies a growing challenge: each year, millions of kilograms of materials are landfilled in our region, and our water supply, though surrounded by lakes, is often stretched thin due to overuse.
The Okanagan’s dry landscape and interconnected ecosystems make waste reduction and water conservation more than just good habits - they’re essential to preserving the region we love. The Too Good to Waste initiative is a call to action for North Okanagan communities to protect what makes this place so special. Together, we can reduce our impact, conserve our resources, and ensure that the North Okanagan remains too good to waste.
Why it Matters
The North Okanagan is more than just a beautiful place - it’s a delicate ecosystem that depends on all of us to thrive. Our waste and water habits directly impact the health of our lakes, land, and wildlife. By making small changes, we can make a big difference!
Water Conservation
Our lakes, rivers, and aquifers define the beauty and vitality of the North Okanagan, but they need our care, and protecting this precious natural resource is a priority. From those long showers to thirsty lawns, every drop we use counts. And with climate change and a growing demand, conservation is more important than ever! Let's be smarter about water. Fix those leaks, choose drought-resistant plants, and water wisely. Small changes at home and in our communities can make a big difference. The North Okanagan is too good to waste - and so is our water.
Waste Reduction
A landfill is an important valuable and limited resource that keeps waste out of our ecosystems and communities. But when something is landfilled we lose resources and space forever. Also, producing new products uses substantial resources that can also be very wasteful locally and globally. Its time to ReTHINK Waste! Taking care of what we have and finding options to repair, reuse and recycle whenever possible are simple but very important actions towards a more sustainable community and planet. In nature, animals are resourceful, nothing goes to waste. Let that inspire us in a region that is Too Good to Waste!
Community Action
We’re stronger together. The Too Good to Waste initiative is about building a culture of sustainability across North Okanagan communities. Whether you're a resident, business owner, student, or farmer - your actions matter.
