Project Description

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has committed to universal metering with installation at property line at all of their utilities. Mabel Lake Water (MLW) started a universal water metering program in 2025. The program entails installing water meters in meter pits near the property line on existing water services. 37 meters were installed at property line through a pilot program in 2025.

Metering will allow better management of water use at MLW through a tiered rate structure
with the expectation of reducing overall water use. This will allow growth in this community without having to invest in upsizing infrastructure. The project will also assist the environment in reducing overall water use in water-stressed areas and enable staff to monitor residential trends, identify leaks (especially private services in old service areas) and enforce restrictions during drought.

This project is partially funded by the Electoral Area "F" Community Works Fund from the Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF). The CCBF provides predictable, long-term, and stable funding to local governments for infrastructure projects. This program is funded by the Federal Government and administered in British Columbia by the Union of BC Municipalities.
