Project Description

In the spring of 2023, there was an extended power outage due to a failed transformer, which impacted the Vance Creek Pump Station and Reservoir. The Vance Creek Pump Station was offline for the duration of the outage as the transformer is the only available power supply to the Vance Creek Reservoir and Pump Station.

A power outage also means the Vance Reservoir level cannot be monitored remotely, and the low-level outlet valve (pneumatically actuated) cannot be operated without bringing in a gas-powered external air compressor and re-plumbing the air lines into the compressor. Monitoring reservoir levels and operating the low-level outlet valve are both important for dam safety. The pump station needs electricity at all times to maintain safe operations of the reservoir and provide adequate water supply to Silver Star Village during the high occupancy winter season.

The electrical design, including generator specifications and site location, has been completed and the installation of the backup generator housed in a walk-in enclosure is scheduled to be completed prior to the next winter season.

This project is partially funded by the Electoral Area "C" Community Works Fund in the amount of $300,000 from the Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF). The CCBF provides predictable, long-term, and stable funding to local governments for infrastructure projects. This program is funded by the Federal Government and administered in British Columbia by the Union of BC Municipalities.
