The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is proud to announce that the roof replacement and building upgrades at the Pat Duke Memorial Arena have been completed successfully.

Since 1967, the arena has been a cornerstone of recreation and community life in Lumby, Cherryville, and Electoral Area D. These improvements ensure that the arena will continue to serve as a safe, reliable, and welcoming space for future generations. The upgrades not only address critical structural needs but also enhance the overall experience for all users, from minor hockey teams and figure skaters to recreational skaters and community event organizers.

The new roof and building improvements will significantly extend the facility's lifespan, reduce maintenance costs, and improve energy efficiency. There will be fewer disruptions to programming, a more comfortable environment for spectators and athletes, and a facility that can better support community events.

“The Pat Duke Memorial Arena is more than just a rink—it’s a gathering place, a training ground, and a hub of community life,” said Rick Fairbairn, Chair of the RDNO White Valley Parks, Recreation, and Culture Committee. “These upgrades ensure that it remains a vibrant and accessible space for all residents, now and into the future.”

The project was made possible through a collaborative funding effort:

  • $800,000 from the Canada Community-Building Fund (CCBF), which provides stable, long-term funding for local infrastructure projects across Canada.
  • $750,000 from the Province of BC’s Growing Communities Fund, supporting infrastructure that meets the needs of growing populations.
  • Additional funding from RDNO reserves ensured the project’s completion without compromising other community services.

"Investing in infrastructure like this is about more than bricks and mortar- it's about supporting the health, connection, and vibrancy of our communities,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “These upgrades reflect our commitment to building strong, resilient communities. This is another way our government is investing to improve the lives of British Columbians”.

“The Canada Community-Building Fund helps ensure that important local facilities like the Pat Duke Memorial Arena remain at the heart of our communities,” said the Honourable Stephen Fuhr, Member of Parliament for Kelowna, British Columbia, “With these upgrades, the arena will continue to provide a safe and welcoming place to play hockey, go skating, and host community gatherings for generations to come.”

In true community spirit, the RDNO has partnered with the Lumby Men’s Shed to design and construct a new wooden sign for the arena. This handcrafted addition will symbolize local pride and volunteerism, further connecting the facility to the people it serves.
