The RDNO is thanking residents, businesses, and all water users for their ongoing commitment to water conservation throughout the 2026 season so that Greater Vernon Water was able to meet and exceed our water conservation goals and avoid increased restrictions.
Community conservation efforts have played a critical role in helping protect local water supplies during a challenging year of dry conditions. Thanks to the actions of residents across Greater Vernon, water demand has been reduced, and valuable water resources have been preserved during a period of continued drought concerns.
"Throughout this season, we've seen our community step up in a remarkable way," said Bob Fleming, Chair of the RDNO Greater Vernon Advisory Committee. “While many factors contributed to managing the significant reduction in water availability, the amazing response and cooperation of residential and agricultural communities have averted disaster. Residents made big changes to how and when they used water, and those collective efforts have greatly helped our agricultural water customers and preserved stored water for emergency use. The agricultural community also responded by significantly reducing its use. It was a team effort. I want to sincerely thank everyone for doing their part.”
While the 2026 irrigation season is beginning to wind down, Stage 3 Water Restrictions will remain in place. This decision reflects ongoing concerns about water supply conditions, with both sources being well below historic averages and drought forecasts that indicate the region may face continued water challenges in 2027.
The Greater Vernon Water Utility (GVW) remains committed to managing water resources responsibly and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the community's water supply. Maintaining Stage 3 Restrictions will ensure enough water for emergency response, help conserve water reserves and position the utility as strongly as possible heading into 2027.
GVW will continue to monitor water supply conditions, reservoir levels, and future forecasts and will keep customers informed of any changes. Residents are encouraged to continue practicing water-wise habits, including limiting outdoor water use, promptly addressing leaks, and reducing unnecessary water use wherever possible.
