• Will my water quality be affected?

  Throughout construction, UV treatment on the Duteau Creek source may be intermittently affected, and GVW has to maintain a lower level of water flow to complete the project.

  Therefore, GVW three water notices are currently in effect:

  1. Customers usually supplied by the Duteau Creek Water Treatment plant are on a precautionary Water Quality Advisory from September 16, 2022, to late March, 2023. GVW made this decision in conjunction with Interior Health.
  2. In order to decrease demand on the Duteau system, GVW is also delivering water from the Kalamalka Lake water source to some customers that usually receive water from Duteau Creek, so customers are also advised of a Water Source Change.
  3. Stage 2 water restrictions are now in place for all GVW customers until further notice.

• Why is the project being worked on now?

  The Dam recently was reclassified and given a higher consequence, as a result it requires a larger spillway.  In addition, the peak flows from 2017 floods confirmed that the spillway needed to be larger to safely convey the higher peak flows predicted as a result of climate change.

• Where is Headgates and the Duteau Creek Intake?

  The Headgates Dam is in Lavington on the south side of the valley, accessed off Whitevale Road approximately 2 km east of Bluenose Road. The Duteau Creek Water Treatment Plant Intake is located at Headgates Dam.

• What is a spillway?

  A spillway is a structure that all dams are required to have that allows water that cannot be stored to safely be conveyed over the dam.
